Sarnia-Lambton, ON – The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership (SLEP) has hired its new Chief Executive Officer.
Stephen Thompson has been hired to replace George Mallay, who will be retiring at the end of the month.
Thompson, who assumes his new role late this summer pending the conclusion of his current contractual obligations, comes to SLEP from the Government of Ontario where he has served on a diplomatic assignment for the past four years as Ontario’s Senior Representative in the Western United States. He has also held the positions of General Manager & Director of Economic Development, Tourism and Marketing for the City of Port Colborne, Investment Lead, Bio-Product Sector for the Government of Ontario, and Business Development Officer for the Niagara Economic & Tourism Corporation.
“Sarnia-Lambton is very fortunate to have attracted a candidate such as Stephen, who carries with him a wealth of experience and accomplishments at the local, regional, and provincial levels,” said SLEP Board Chair Bruce Hein. “Stephen’s strong leadership skills and fresh outlook will help continue the legacy of effective leadership at SLEP while bolstering Sarnia-Lambton’s reputation on the international stage.”
Thompson completed his Economic Development certification and related Fellowship at the University of Waterloo, where he also completed his Bachelor of Environmental Studies as well as his Masters Degree in Local Economic Development.
He has received numerous awards over his career, including regional and international Top 40 under Forty awards, a leadership award from the International Economic Development Council in 2011, and the University of Waterloo’s alumni achievement award in 2016.
The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership is a private/public sector, community-based partnership that works continually to increase the economic activity in Sarnia-Lambton. SLEP’s mission is to promote the distinctive advantages that Sarnia-Lambton has to offer to companies and residents.
By coordinating community-based economic development initiatives and working to maintain a commercially attractive environment, SLEP fosters new business creation and helps to ensure that established firms remain and grow locally.
