A Marvelous On-Line Mapping Tool - Geographic Information System (GIS)
“It slices, it dices… it does everything for you!” Staff at the Economic Partnership can scarcely hold back their enthusiasm regarding the latest mapping tool released by the County of Lambton . “We’ve been waiting for something like this for many years,” says George Mallay, General Manager. Adds Edith Wilmot-Quigg, “Not only can we can offer our customers the possibility of viewing industrial sites online without leaving their office, they can simultaneously find out about services and demographic data in the surrounding area of a proposed site.”
The $1.5 million project began in 2000 with funding from the County of Lambton, the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada. Included in the development group were 33 different government agencies, conservation authorities, and private sector organizations. Most of the maps are made up of aerial photographs that become grid lines at a closer level.
The system allows queries that can determine, for example, how many people live within a specified radius, their age groups and employment levels. It can also perform a search of the Economic Partnership’s Business Directory. You can look up the location of a specific company or ask for all the companies in a particular category. You may also ask for driving directions. The maps show many details such as the location of property lines, airports, fire halls, libraries, sports facilities, parks, etc.
The Economic Partnership is contributing data with respect to available industrial land and in the future, available industrial buildings. All the industrial parks in Lambton County are already entered in the system. Information is provided on each site such as address, area, zoning and services.
To access the GIS you can either visit the County of Lambton website or the Economic Partnership website.
