200 more jobs for Call Centre

Sarnia’s new telemarketing centre will create more jobs than had originally been anticipated.

RMH Teleservices will employ about 700 people at the Dow Modeland Centre, company executive vice-president Mike Scharff said Thursday. When the company first announced it would locate in the facility, it was estimated that 500 jobs would be created.

Scharff said the operation should open by the end of this month, taking up two floors and 48,000 square feed of space. “Work at the centre is complete or near completion, other than a few decorating-type things we’re working on. And communication lines still need to be brought in.”

He predicted it will be a busy place, with “multiple shifts” at many seats.

George Mallay, general manager of the local Economic Development Office, says the centre will be one of the biggest employers in the city. And it’ll pump a lot of money into the Sarnia-Lambton economy because “none of them are minimum wage jobs.” He added “they’ve been actively hiring people. They want to get up and running as soon as they can.

Scharff said most employees will start at $8 per hour. He estimates about 600 of the jobs will be full-time.

Partly as a result of the RMH’s arrival, city council has decided to extend bus service across Modeland Road, with Sarnia Transit making its first stops at the centre next week.

RMH Teleservices, based in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, is a leading provider of outsourced teleservices for both inbound and outbound call services to large volume corporate users in insurance, financial services, telecommunications, utility, Internet technology and other industries.

The company operates 18 call centres with over 5,000 employees and is rapidly expanding in Canada. The sarnia site will be its fourth in this country. A fifth will open soon in Sault Ste. Marie.

Scharff said the company is pleased with the reception it received in Canada and the quality of employees it has found here. (The Observer)
