Alton Farms continues to grow

July 22, 2018 – Colin Cowdy, Blackburn News Sarnia

You no longer need to visit Niagara Falls to find yourself in Ontario’s wine country. The Alton’s Winery in Lambton County is putting a cork in that idea.

Anne and Marc Alton officially opened the area’s first and only estate winery in April 2013.

Anne says since then, the 90-acre winery has grown immensely.

They now produce around 17 to 18 different bridals a year, they’ve brought on two full-time workers and a few part-time workers, and they have quite a bit more wine on hand.

“Five years ago we had 2,000 litres of wine and now we’re at over 16,000 litres,” says Anne. “I would say that as the vineyard ages our wine gets better. Our store has expanded, and what we offer has expanded to include pizza and short leash charcuterie boards.”

Anne says fans of ice wine, a dessert wine with a sweet taste, could also be in for a treat later this year. The Alton’s wine is available in-store, online, at various shops and restaurants around the county, and bottles will soon be appearing in local LCBO stores.

“Well it’s hush-hush, but we do have a small batch of probably the first ice wine in Lambton County to be released sometime this year.”

The winery located on Aberarder Line is open to the public for wine tastings, tours and a number of events all year long.
