BioAmber says Sarnia plant has exceeded operational targets

BioAmber Inc., the operator of one of Sarnia’s newest industrial plants, says the local plant has surpassed its operational targets for the year.

“Our third quarter was an exceptional one from an operational standpoint,” said Jean-Francois Huc, the company’s CEO in a release outlining BioAmber’s performance in the period ending September 30, 2015. “The plant was commissioned in a short period of time, a remarkable achievement given that Sarnia is a first-of-kind commercial scale facility.”

Huc said the performance of the plant has exceeded targets set for 2015.

“The superior performance we are seeing . . . is due to our unique yeast, the five years of operating experience we gained in the demonstration plant in France and applied to Sarnia, and the perseverance and hard work of our operations, engineering and R&D teams,” he said.

From an operational standpoint, the Sarnia plant is operating 25% of the yield target and 40% above the productivity target set for 2015. Both numbers are already exceeding long-term targets set for the plant, the company said.

The Sarnia facility passed a commercial operation test in which it ran continuously for several days and surpassed the plant fermentation, purification and production rate targets.

Bio-succinic acid being produced is used in the food and beverage industry, primarily as an acidity regulator. BioAmber said the product made in Sarnia has already been qualified by a number of customers.
