Grants for entrepreneurs and businesses being offered

The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership (SLEP) is launching the 2020 version of the Starter Company Plus Program, designed to support entrepreneurship, business growth, and job creation.

A total of six grants are available through the program. Successful applicants will be provided with up to $5,000 along with customized business coaching and access to peer-led support sessions.

“Starter Company Plus provides a unique way for entrepreneurs and businesses to access much needed resources. Initially launched in the Sarnia-Lambton area in 2019, we are extremely pleased to offer this program again and encourage businesses from across Lambton County to consider applying. As well, our team is available to provide assistance navigating the application process,” said Stephen Thompson, CEO of the Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership.

This year the consultation and application processes have moved online with electronic sharing and submission of files.

“While we know that businesses have a number of priorities at this time, we also recognize the continued importance of encouraging innovation, investment, and job creation through programs such as this,” added Thompson.

“Increasingly we are hearing from businesses looking at innovative solutions to drive more sales online while also looking at flexible delivery options. The program is adaptable for individual business needs business plans will be reviewed with a focus on short and long-term business sustainability and growth,” said Thompson.

As part of the program in-take, applicants will have a consultation with a Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership team member who will provide advice on the proposed application and review the four documents and three-minute video pitch required for submission.

Candidates who are awarded the grants and accepted into the program will receive a grant of up to $5,000 as well as:

  • Personalized coaching and mentorship from a SLEP team member.
  • Mentorship from local business leaders and entrepreneurs.
  • Monthly (for 12 months) peer-led discussion sessions on best business practices.

“We know that funding is top of mind for all businesses and entrepreneurs right now,” Thompson noted. “Being able to help the people and companies that make up the backbone of our economy is important, and we are very pleased to be able to offer this opportunity to the Sarnia-Lambton area.”

The program is administered locally by the Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership’s Business Enterprise Centre and Funded by the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation, and Trade.

Starter Company Plus is open to businesses and entrepreneurs over the age of 18 and not currently enrolled at a Post-Secondary Institution who have not previously received a Starter Company Grant in the past.
