Heavy Load Corridor a priority For McNaughton

Ontario’s new Infrastructure Minister says securing funding for a local heavy haul corridor is a priority.

Lambton-Kent Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton says he realizes the importance of the project to the Sarnia community.

It’s estimated as many as 3,000 jobs could be created.

“I’ve spoken with industry over the last number of years with MPP Bob Bailey regarding the heavy haul corridor”, says McNaughton. “I know the importance to Sarnia-Lambton and to the region. There’s a lot of important industry and thousands of jobs in Sarnia-Lambton. We need to ensure that we see the proposals come forward under the new government and work with our key stakeholders to ensure that we deliver significant investment to communities across the province.”

The project would create a dedicated route from Sarnia-Lambton’s metal fabrication shops to Sarnia Harbour and involve significant road and power line modifications.

In April, the federal government denied a request for $6-million for the corridor which is expected to cost around $12-million.

At the time, MP Marilyn Gladu remained optimistic about getting funding from other sources, including the province or local industry.
