Lambton College named number 1 research college in Canada

SARNIA, November 1, 2018 – Lambton College has secured its position as the national leader in applied research.

According to Research Infosource Inc., which released its annual list of Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges earlier today, Lambton College is now ranked as the #1 research college in Canada based on research income.

The national findings are based on data obtained through a survey of publicly-funded colleges and from financial statements, which include funding received from both internal and external sources to the organizations.

In the 2018 ranking, which is based on the 2016-2017 fiscal year, Lambton College recorded a total Research Income of $11,397,150 (excluding in-kind contributions).

The College took the top provincial spot for the second time in its 10 year history, and also ranked #1 in Canada for the number of paid research students (students involved in applied research projects that were paid for their work) at a medium-sized college for the third year in a row. The College recorded total engagement of 144 paid applied research students for the ranking period, and involved an additional 71 faculty, researcher assistants and technicians across 125 research partnerships over that same timeframe.

“To be ranked as the number one research college in the country is a huge honour for Lambton College, and a true testament to the incredible efforts of our researchers, faculty, students and staff involved with our many projects,” said Judith Morris, President & CEO, Lambton College. “It has taken vision and purpose to get us to where we are today, and to be named Canada’s top research college reinforces our commitment to continue to provide innovative solutions for our partners, and experiential learning opportunities for our students to work on collaborative projects with local SMEs and industries, where they gain advanced and practical expertise.”

“Ranking as the number one research college in Canada is exceptional news for Lambton College, our partners and our community!” said Mehdi Sheikhzadeh, Executive Dean, Applied Research & Innovation at Lambton College. “Our College has seen tremendous growth and national success in this area, much of which can be contributed to our world-class faculty and staff, leading-edge infrastructure and a highly collaborative culture that aims to develop exceptional innovations and enable bold ideas. We plan to build off this success to continue developing new collaborations and research initiatives, while expanding our research activities nationally and internationally.”

“Lambton College has had another year of excellent research performance,” said Ron Freedman, CEO, Research Infosource Inc. “Lambton’s research income total is especially noteworthy because it is a medium-size institution that performs on par with its larger counterparts.”

Lambton College’s Applied Research Department was formed in 2007. Since then, the College has received close to $36 million in funding from federal and provincial agencies.

Through applied research and innovation, the College has helped develop more than 60 new prototypes, 20 pilot plants and 300 new/improved processes, technologies and services.
