Lambton College Receives $723,000 Research Grant from Ontario Innovation Trust

A $723,000 grant from Ontario Innovation Trust will enhance the research capability of Lambton College to improve efficiencies and reduce manufacturing costs of Ontario plastic and automobile industries, Tony Hanlon, President of Lambton College, announced today.

“We are pleased Ontario Innovation Trust is helping Lambton create a research facility that will increase the competitiveness of Ontario manufacturers through the use of biodegradable materials, efficient use of energy, and the use of advanced manufacturing technologies and process control,” said Hanlon.

The grant will support creation of a $2.1-million small-scale manufacturing system at the College’s Centre of Excellence for Process Manufacturing, with results easily transferable to the manufacturing floor. The Centre consists of the College’s three flagship programs: Chemical Production and Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technology and the Mechanical Technician – Industrial Maintenance (MTIM) programs. Included in the Centre, are the 36 courses in the Chemical Production Engineering Program which are being developed completely online and with the addition of this grant, the College will have the funding needed to support their applied research facility and resulting consulting service.

Lanxess Inc., one of Lambton College’s major partners, is contributing significant in-kind resources to support this research initiative.

The Research Team, headed by Lambton College professor Dr. Kim Choo, will perform collaborative research with Lanxess scientists to develop new thermoplastic products and technologies that are more efficient and environmentally friendly.

“This research facility will provide our CPET and ICET students with the opportunity to work as research assistants to a group of very talented scientists,” said Judy Morris, Vice President, Academic Services.

The grant was awarded by the Ontario Innovation Trust, which was created by the provincial government to help Ontario’s universities, hospitals, colleges and research institutes enhance the infrastructure needed for scientific research and technology development.
