Lambton College cracked the top 20 among research colleges in Canada in a recent ranking.

The Sarnia school is 17th in the Research Infosource Inc., ranking of Canada’s Top 50 Research colleges, and sixth among Ontario research colleges, based on a survey and financial statements from publicly-funded colleges.

“This ranking, which particularly highlights a significant increase in our research income, shows Lambton College’s commitment to becoming a leader in applied research and development,” said Lambton president Judith Morris.

“Our goal is to continue to expand our research capacity and capabilities, supporting both local and regional industry and organizations with their own applied research and development projects.”

Lambton College saw a more than 29% increase in research revenue in 2013, totalling $3.1 million. That’s up from $2.4 million the previous year.

Since the college’s applied research department formed in 2007, Lambton has received more than $12.5 million in research funding, including $550,000 the federal government announced earlier this year.

That followed last year’s announcement of more than $5 million in major applied research projects, establishing two research centres and a new industrial research chair at the college.

There are currently 34 active research projects at Lambton, involving 53 students, graduates and research assistants.

The Top 50 list included 16 Ontario colleges, representing a total of $48.1-million in research funding.

“Fiscal 2013 was a solid year for Ontario’s colleges,” said Ron Freedman with Research Infosource.

“These are still early days for college research, and for this reason, we expect to see a high level of annual variability in research funding.”

Elsewhere in southwestern Ontario, London’s Fanshawe College placed 50th on the national list.
