Ontario is proud to welcome its first new automotive assembly plant in more than a decade, said Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty.
“Toyota’s choice sends a message to the world: Ontario is the place to be,” said Premier McGuinty. “It’s the place to be for investors who want to access the world’s most productive workforce. And it’s the place to be for investors looking for stable, predictable business costs, free from the spiralling health costs plaguing many parts of the world.”
“We’ve always said our greatest asset is our people — and Toyota has chosen our workforce. And we’ve always said medicare is one of our competitive advantages — and Toyota has chosen the stability that medicare provides investors in Ontario.”
The new Toyota plant will bring at least 1,300 new high-value, well-paying jobs to Woodstock — and in time, more jobs for Ontario through spin-off auto parts and supplier industries. Toyota is investing $800 million to build the new plant, which is expected to be operational by 2008, while the government will invest up to $70 million, including support for training and infrastructure.
“Locating this new plant here is a strong vote of confidence in our province,”said Minister of Economic Development and Trade Joseph Cordiano, who has played a key role in the province’s successful efforts to attract new automotive investment.
“Toyota recognizes the value of our skilled and talented workforce. And we welcome Toyota.”
The government’s investment will help ensure our workers are equipped for the next generation of high-tech, leading-edge jobs in this important industry.
It builds on, but is not a part of, investments made through the government’s Automotive Investment Strategy, which has already leveraged more than $3.5 billion in automotive investment in Ontario in the last year.
The government’s investments in the auto sector include: $235 million investment in the $2.5 billion GM Beacon Project$100 million to support Ford’s $1 billion investment$32 million in the Chatham Heavy Truck Project.
“A stronger automotive industry helps to build a stronger and more prosperous province for all of us — and a quality of life that is truly second to none,” said Premier McGuinty.
