Students at Lambton College are eager for the completion of the school’s state-of-the-art “Sustainable Smart Home.”

“I’m pretty excited about it,” said Bronwyn Roberts, a third-year Alternative Energy student. “It’s going to give us a hands-on experience about what we learn in our classroom and labs.

“We’ll be able to take our theoretical learning, and then come over to the house to see everything up and running, fully functional, and see how it works in a real world setting.”

Roberts joined a number of other students, faculty, administration, community leaders and politicians for a celebration this week, to give the official “green light” for construction on the $1.2-million facility, which will feature solar, geothermal and hydrogen fuel cell technology.

The 2,500 square-foot home will be built on the northwest side of the campus, next to the Early Childhood Education day-care Centre.

“This is a very important day, not only for Lambton College, but for the community of Sarnia-Lambton,” said college president Tony Hanlon

“This multipurpose facility will serve as a learning lab for our students in the trade area, and also our alternative energy programs.”

The Smart Home will serve as both a unique working lab for students, as well as a resource for the community, he explained.

“It will also serve to educate the citizens of Sarnia-Lambton, especially the youth, about new energy conservation innovations and how they can apply those in their everyday lives.”
