Ubiquity Solar announces Sarnia-Lambton pilot plant

Sarnia-Lambton, Ontario, Canada – November 28, 2013 – At a Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership public meeting this morning Ian MacLellan, President and CEO of Ubiquity Solar Inc., discussed his company’s plans to set up an $11 million pilot plant in TransAlta’s Bluewater Energy Park in Sarnia, Ontario.

The plant will manufacture silicon wafers for use in photovoltaic solar panel cells. MacLellan noted that they expect to begin construction of the pilot plant in the first quarter of 2014. Construction of the full production facility, also planned for the Bluewater Energy Park site, is scheduled for 2016. Employment at the pilot plant is expected to start with ten, with the manufacturing facility expected to employ several hundreds in jobs that MacLellan likened to those in traditional chemical facilities.

MacLellan cited Sarnia-Lambton’s knowledge of, and familiarity with, large-scale chemical manufacturing as one of Ubiquity’s deciding factors in its choice of Sarnia-Lambton for the pilot plant.

Also, at the public meeting Economic Partnership general manager George Mallay outlined the organization’s work in positioning the area as a Biohybrid Chemistry Cluster, and endeavours in other sectors such as agriculture, information technology, and energy. Mallay also discussed the organization’s advocacy work, along with other community groups, regarding issues such as the now rescinded Sarnia Jail closure and the need for better rail service.
