VIA Rail Celebrating 40 Years with Sarnians

August 25, 2018
11:00am - 3:00pm

Centennial Park, Sarnia, ON, Canada

Sarnia, Ontario, August 17, 2018RAIL (Rail Advocacy in Lambton) is honoured to announce that Sarnia has been selected as one of 40 cities from across Canada to Celebrate VIA Rail`s 40th Anniversary.

VIA Rail Canada (VIA Rail) is taking the opportunity on its 40th anniversary to thank Canadians for their loyalty and invite them on a journey towards a more sustainable future. In June, VIA Rail announced its national initiative 40 Sustainable Actions for Our 40th Anniversary. The 40 community actions were selected for the potential they offer in terms of longer term impact for the communities.

“In addition to boosting employee pride and engaging them in a collective project, these 40 sustainable actions marking our 40th anniversary will help develop special ties with the communities served by VIA Rail. Indeed, we serve more than passengers, we serve communities. Each of these 40 actions is evidence of our wish to give back to these communities, and each underscores VIA Rail’s desire to ensure a sustainable future for our country. On August 25th in Sarnia, and in recognition of RAIL’s 5th Anniversary, we will be making a modest contribution to Centennial Park by planting several Native Autumn Fantasy Maples, an environmental initiative which will benefit present and future generations alike”, said Yves Desjardins-Siciliano, VIA Rail President and Chief Executive Officer.

The RAIN or SHINE Celebration will take place on Saturday, August 25th from 11 to 3 p.m. at Centennial Park.

“Rail transportation has the ability to combine energy efficiency with economic, environmental and social value. Both young and old seek a more civilized way to travel and leave their cars at home (through need or choice). The members of RAIL continue to seek a high performance passenger rail service into Sarnia that is more frequent and accessible.” said Mabel Higgins & Jim Houston, Co-Chairs, RAIL.

The day will start with the opening Tree Planting Ceremony of the Autumn Fantasy Maples near the North Parking lot. Following the planting, local residents and visitors alike are invited to tour VIA Rail Canada`s 40th Anniversary Locomotive, Coach Car, the Glen Fraser Lounge Car and the Skyline Dome Car. Also present will be the Sarnia Historical Society, Lambton College student representatives and the CNR 6069 restoration project committee.  The CNR 6069 Train will be open for tours as well. RAIL & VIA Rail Staff will be available to assist and answer questions. Watch for VIA RAIL’s Zachery Wells, who will entertain children and adults alike with magic tricks, juggling and balloon art. There will be various Free Draws throughout the event culminating in VIA’s premier draw for a ROUND TRIP Business Class Voucher for two anywhere within the Quebec City-Windsor/Sarnia Corridor.
