The Diageo Sarnia-Lambton Small Business Support Grant is a one-time funding opportunity created to support local small businesses that are working to overcome operational challenges or pursue growth opportunities. Delivered by the Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership (SLEP), through funds provided by Diageo Canada, this initiative provides targeted financial support to help business owners strengthen operations and contribute to the region’s economic stability.

Ten successful applicants will each receive a grant of up to $4,000 to apply toward eligible business expenses, based on a submitted project plan. Applications open August 11, 2025, with a deadline to apply by September 30, 2025.

Program Overview

The Diageo Sarnia-Lambton Small Business Grant program was developed to provide assistance to small businesses across Lambton County. Funded by Diageo Canada and delivered by the Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership, this initiative aims to support long-term sustainability, job creation and retention, and local economic development.

This grant is intended to support small businesses that are:

  • Working to address operational or financial constraints affecting growth or long-term stability
  • Planning investments that will strengthen or expand their business
  • Seeking support to implement specific improvements or initiatives

In addition to funding, selected businesses will receive advisory support from the Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership and be recognized during the 2025 Sarnia-Lambton Business Week.

Grant Amount and Use of Funds

Each selected business will receive up to $4,000. The funds must be used for project expenses outlined in the submitted budget and may include:

  • Hiring or retaining employees
  • Equipment purchases or upgrades
  • Marketing or business development initiatives
  • Facility improvements
  • Digital tools, software, or other operational upgrades

Funds cannot be used for personal expenses or activities not directly tied to business operations.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Who Is Eligible?

To ensure the program’s effectiveness and alignment with sponsor and community goals, the Applicant must:

  • Be at least 19 years old.
  • Be a resident of Lambton County.
  • Be legally permitted to register and operate a business in the Province of Ontario (typically a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, Temporary Resident, or someone with a valid Canadian Work Permit that does not have any restrictions in terms of registering a Canadian business or self-employment).
  • Deposit the subject business’s revenues in a Canadian business bank account and be subject to Canadian taxes.
  • Be able to provide an income statement for the subject business’s past year of operation, verifiable by a corresponding income tax filing.
  • Have a clear business need or plan for use of the grant funds.
What Kind of Business Is Eligible?

Any type of business, as long as it:

  • Is an existing small business registered and operating in Lambton County.
  • Has been registered and operating for at least one year prior to applying.
  • Is a sole proprietorship, partnership or corporation where the applicant is the majority shareholder.
  • Operates on a full-time basis. (For purposes of this grant, “full-time” is considered providing employment for at least one person (the owner and/or an employee) working over 30 hours a week throughout the year.
  • Follows relevant government regulations for operating a business.

The following business types are ineligible:

  • Franchises and distributorships
  • Non-profits or charities
  • Part-time operations
  • Multi-level marketing ventures
  • Businesses that may have a real or perceived negative impact on the community or reputational risk, as determined by SLEP.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must submit the following:

  • Complete the Online Application Form, including:
    • Business background and description
    • Identified challenges or growth opportunities, and business goals
    • Description of how the grant will support business outcomes
    • Description of community impact or relevance
  • Optional Supporting Documents:
    • Cover letter (up to 1 page, minimum 11pt font) outlining:
      • Ownership, operations, value proposition, and target market
      • Alignment with grant priorities
      • Planned use of funds and expected outcomes
    • Business registration (showing legal name and date)
    • Most recent 12-month income statement
    • Cash flow forecast for the next 12 months (template available)

Applicants are encouraged, but not required, to book a consultation with a SLEP advisor before applying.

HOW APPLICATIONS ARE EVALUATED

Applications will be assessed with attention to the following priority areas of impact:

  • Business sustainability or expansion potential
  • Opportunity for job creation or retention
  • Hospitality or tourism-related service offerings
  • Businesses with a physical storefront or location open to the public
  • Overall contribution to local economic activity

Evaluation Process

Submissions will be reviewed by a selection committee based on:

  • Clear demonstration of financial need
  • Feasibility of the project and use of funds
  • Strength of supporting documentation
  • Potential for business and community impact
  • Degree of alignment with grant priorities

Program Expectations

Selected recipients must:

  • Participate in at least two SLEP or SBEC consultations or attend two SLEP or SBEC training events within 6 months of grant distribution.
  • Submit a short follow-up report or survey within six months, outlining:
    • Use of funds
    • Business progress and outcomes (e.g. revenue growth, job creation)
    • Feedback on the grant process
