Basell Canada Inc. joins Sarnia-Lambton industrial community

Effective October 1, 2000, the former Montell facility at 339 Lasalle Line in St. Clair Township is now part of Basell Canada Inc. The plant was previously owned by Shell Canada Limited prior to the formation of Montell in 1995. The plant comprises two world-scale facilities: a polypropylene plant and an isopropyl alcohol plant. Shell Canada maintains ownership of the isopropyl plant which will be operated by Basell on their behalf.

Basell is a new global player in polyolefins formed through the merger of Montell, Elenac, and Targor, This 50-50 joint venture between the Royal Dutch Shell Group and BASF’s polyolefin operations comes at a time of increasing consolidation and competitive pressures in the petrochemical industry.

The existing companies Montell (previously owned 100% by Shell), Elenac (50/50 Shell/BASF), and Targor (100% BASF) have been combined in the joint venture and form the world’s leading polyolefin producer. Basell will be the global leader in polypropylene and the fourth largets producer of polyethylene. It is based in Hoofddorp, near Amsterdamm in the Netherlands.

The Basell St. Clair Township facility continues to be commited to the Sarnia-Lambton community through its Responsible Care endeavours.
