Clean energy in southern Ontario

It’s been months of construction and preparation, but Waste Management has got a new landfill-gas-to-energy project up and running in Petrolia.
The facility will be used to generate clean and renewable energy, which will in turn power over 2,000 homes in the area.
Wes Muir, Director of Corporate Communications with Waste Management in Oakville, Ontario says methane gas will be collected and used in a more effective and efficient way.
“What we’re doing with this facility, is rather than just burning it off (methane), we’re actually running it through the engines, which will then convert it into a clean renewable energy source to power local communities in the area.”
Electricity generated will be directed to the Town of Petrolia The gas will power four large engines and will generate approximately 3.2 megawatts of power.
“It will be benefiting the local community directly since the waste that we pick up in the community and the surrounding region is actually being converted to green and clean renewable energy,” says Muir.
The opening of this facility represents one of two projects for the region. The second project is aimed at the Twin Creeks Landfill in nearby Watford.
