Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy to Deliver Investment Attraction and Job Creation to Sarnia-Lambton

SARNIA, ON: To support the recently branded Ontario’s Hydrogen Hub, a low-carbon
hydrogen strategy is to be developed by the Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership.
The strategy will provide a business case for industry, define targeted pathways to
attract hydrogen related foreign direct investments, and assist existing local facilities to
influence corporate decision making with the goal of driving investment and expansion
locally.

Led by the Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership, the Ontario’s Hydrogen Hub was
launched in 2021 and is supported by an alliance of twenty local stakeholders, including
industry, research, and economic development leaders to kickstart the Sarnia-Lambton
area’s low-carbon hydrogen economy and position the region for success as Canada
shifts towards a low-carbon future. The vision of Ontario’s Hydrogen Hub is to leverage
the strong local hydrogen infrastructure as a catalyst to position the Sarnia-Lambton
area to become home to the low carbon hydrogen sector for Ontario and beyond.

Supported by Global Affairs Canada’s CanExport Community Investments program, the
low-carbon hydrogen strategy will guide efforts by the Sarnia-Lambton Economic
Partnership and partners in the Ontario’s Hydrogen Hub by providing the framework and
roadmap for industry attraction, while supporting the long-term success of the Sarnia-
Lambton area in the low-carbon economy. Similar strategies have led to the
development of successful hydrogen hubs and associated investment in competing
regions of Canada, such as Alberta.

“The hydrogen industry is expected to see billions of dollars of investment across
Canada over the next few years with a focus on decarbonizing energy across a variety
of platforms and uses,” said partnership interim-CEO Judith Morris. “The Sarnia-
Lambton area is positioned to be Ontario’s leader in hydrogen production, demand,
research, and associated investment. A regional low-carbon hydrogen strategy will
allow Ontario’s Hydrogen Hub to align with the Ontario and Canada hydrogen
strategies, to maximize the potential for foreign direct investment and job creation, as
Canada pursues its commitment to a net-zero future.”

Local, provincial, and national stakeholders will be asked to participate in the
development of the low-carbon hydrogen strategy, which is expected to be completed in
the first half of 2022.
